Plum Hollow

Exceeded our expectations!

5 of 5 Stars

We expected, because of other positive reviews and then a great initial conversation with Stan, a wonderful stay at Plum Hollow. It was better than wonderful! Stan and Annie take pride in their cottages and pleasure in fixing them up for their guests as evidenced by the many thoughtful extras. Plum Hollow was impeccably clean from the outside steps to the spic-and-span basement laundry area. We were greeted by fresh muffins and fruit and hand-written notes but, also, by birds feeding at multiple feeders, flowering hanging plants and an herb garden ready for picking. The cottage was furnished with all of the basics - plenty of linens thoughtfully laundered in skin-sensitive detergent; ample, comfortable seating; good quality mattresses on the beds and lots of closet and dresser drawer space; a kitchen well-stocked with serving and cooking dishes. Stan and Annie went above and beyond by adding lots of charm with a whimsical "malt shop" porch, art on the walls, books and games, and objects of interest like the kaleidoscope that fascinated my grandson!

These owners have a knack for quickly assessing how much to interact with guests, largely staying out of the way except for mysteriously showing up to empty the fire pit every day and make sure the trash gets to the curb. However, we were very grateful that Stan kept us informed of activities going on in the area; my son-in-law loved the stand-up paddle board that he would never have known about had Stan not knocked on the door one morning to tell us about it!

We went to Bluffton for Lake Michigan but loved exploring the history and charm of Bluffton and its neighborhoods. The beach was an easy walk, even for my two year old grandson, and we found another beach at Kruse Park that was an easy 5-minute drive away. We made a day trip to Holland where we enjoyed some parks and the shops there and there are other towns close by that are worth exploring. Many thanks to Stan and Annie for all they did to make our vacation such a lovely and memorable one. We hope to return to Plum Hollow and would enthusiastically recommend it to anyone seeking a great vacation by the lake!

Plum Hollow is the larger of our two cottages. The living space is on a single level — only the laundry area is in the basement. Entryways are fairly easy for the elderly or infirm to access, with three steps to enter the front and four steps in the back. Both entrances have very sturdy handrails. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are nicely interconnected, giving the common areas a roomy feel. The old-style booth in the “Malt Shop” provides extra mealtime sitting space, or an out-of-the-way game room for the kids. A lot of guests like to be able to take their coffee and a book out here in the early morning while the others are sleeping in.

Bedrooms one and two have enough extra room for the rollaway bed, if needed. The master bedroom has its own private sink and toilet. The main bath, with shower/tub combo, plus toilet and sink, is located between bedrooms one and three. Bedroom two, in the rear of the cottage, has an open-air feeling with its cathedral ceiling and fan. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need, and we try to keep a nice selection of spices and condiments so you won't need to buy or bring your own.

Four majestic beech trees enhance the area around the Plum Hollow cottage, and a large, beautiful Blue Spruce helps shade the picnic and grill area during BBQ dinners. There is a picnic table and a combination bench/table next to the grill area. We supply plenty of outdoor seating and have extras if needed. Either gas or charcoal grilling is available — let us know which you prefer before your arrival. A shaded swing between a pair of trees in front is very comfortable. A large off-street parking area is provided.
